Hi Warren. Its a little late in the season to start breeding now, we start about March/April time, and condition birds from xmas.I have tried all types of vitamins and the only one that makes a real noticable difference is BOOST 250 from Stock Nutricion, use twice a week then pre season, three to four times a week. Join a local bird club and get tips from other fanciers not only how to condition your birds but also info on how best to breed etc. Congratulations on starting the hobby. Regards Phil

With regard to the corns; a tip I picked up from another fancier was using a perch made from a piece of dressed timber. I bought a length of dowel from the local builders merchants which was moulded in a V shape. I then cut to length and used as a perch V, shape up. This takes the pressure of the corn and as Phil advised I treat with iodine. This works for me.
(Posted on 2008-08-06 08:22:00 by ) -
Trev. The main cause of corns are round or oval perches, the smaller they are the worse the corns get. Use just one flat softwood perch low down until the bird gets better. Treat the corn with neat iodine every day.

help! i have bred a few nice looking birds this year but some of them are getting corns on their feet and there is blood on the perches.
what type of perches do you use phil and what size

Hi Mr Phil Warne, I am Spanish and have been living in England for 34 years. I have bred border canaries for over 30 years just for the love of them. Last year I moved back to my native country Spain, taking 10 birds with me. Seven years ago I bought some canaries from a very good friend of mine from Banbury, who like me is a great admirer of your birds and I believe he bought some birds from you or at least as I know one cock bird. I retained all the chicks from that related bird and I have now bred in Spain this year a couple of very nice chicks so its worth waiting. I am intending to show them this year ashame there is not a great following of borders in Menorca where I live. I have shown the video of the west side to members of the society and also videos I have bought from you over the years. I shall miss seeing your birds this year in the shows, keep on the web site please so I can keep up to date and try to promote the border that wonderful bird. Mine don't look anything like yours in the video, but I'll keep waiting.
Regards
Rafael

Hi
Re the wromg class birds I had always thought that it might be a good idea to have 2 classes just for birds whch might be wrong classed 1 for cocks 1 for hens this could contain anything from ticked, heavy varigated,3/4dark etc, this would eliminate all the problems and only means adding 2 classes to the schedule .
regards
Mike
(Posted on 2008-07-09 16:33:00 by ) -
How often do we see the judge take 15 minutes looking at 1 bird, trying to decide if it is clear or varigated. He will be blowing the feathers looking for the second mark, shaking the bird about. Then he will call over other judges to express their opinion, most of the time you will get a different answer from each judge. What is being achieved by this? How would you feel if this was your bird?
When I am judging I always try and put myself in the fanciers postion. If a bird is borderline let it go, if it is obvious wrong class it.
Re-classing birds is a organisational nightmare. Last year I witnessed an experienced judge tie himself in knots, as he kept re-classing birds then going back and having to re-judge classes.
(Posted on 2008-07-09 09:43:00 by ) -
Hi Mike. Finding your bird wrong classed is frustrating, and often you will see birds wrong classed a week later when they are put in the class a judge the week before said they should be in.Im not sure what the answer is, perhaps the judges should go round checking all the ticked and dark classes before he starts judging and reclass birds before he starts as they do in some countries, but this is a lot of extra work for the show sec. or as you once said have an extra class for all the questionable birds and judge them all as a class? Has Anyone got any good ideas??? Phil
(Posted on 2008-07-08 13:24:00 by ) -
Hi Phil
With the show season coming soon I was wondering how you feel about birds being wrong classed I know lots of times it is obvious that a bird is wrong classed but there are times when a bird is border line and could almost be in one of two classes.and it is so upsetting when your best Ticked bird is W.C. as varigated for example. do you see any solution to this or should we just carry on as it is the way it has always been done.
regards
Mike

Thanks for that......all very interesting.
Good luck for the breeding season.

(Posted on 2008-03-28 10:13:00 by ) -
Neil. I could write a book with your answer, I only ever use cocks that have been line bred to a very high standard, and I call them my A team, These birds have been line bred with this format for many many years. If a pair lacks body width, or type etc, say they are both straight through, then I will only keep the hens from this pair, It doesnât matter how good the cocks look they will never make my A team. The hens I keep from this pair will only be kept if they do not carry the faults visually, and they most likely will, unless you are sure the problem isnât in the line then dont use her, if she is good enough to keep then when she is paired, try and rectify the unseen gene by using the correct cock. I could go on for ever on this subject but with the breeding season now in full swing now, I donât have the time to bore you! Phil
(Posted on 2008-03-27 16:49:00 by ) -
Scotty, An interesting point, you do need to overcompensate for any weakness the hen might have but it does help understanding the birds feather, when you trim the birds in the vent area, make a note of the feather length, thickness etc, and try and pair opposites, and do remember to consider the birds brothers and sisters faults, so you are avoiding unseen problems. Yes cocks are often more straight through, or 11to 5. compared with hens, if you only have birds like this then work hard with the birds that have a good neck with width. Phil
(Posted on 2008-03-27 16:06:00 by ) -
Phil,
Expanding on your comment about using the hen's postion for breeding.
Are there certain traits more dominant in hens than cocks? For example size, postion, feather quality etc.. Or are dominant genes created through selective breeding and the sex of the bird is irrelevant?
Neil.
(Posted on 2008-03-26 17:38:00 by ) -
Hi Phil
Thanks for that.I thought that was what you were referring to but 12 to 4 seemed to be almost right angular.Just to satisfy my curiosity I split a picture of the model into segments depicting a clock face and you are spot on.A line running through the eye at 12 oclock gives the tail a position marginally above 4.You mention having the right cocks to suit hens of this type.Would'nt they also need to meet this 12 to 4 criteria,or are you looking for something different in the cock ?
Regards
Scotty
(Posted on 2008-03-25 21:24:00 by ) -
Hi DG and Scotty.
If you take a line on the new border model from the eye down through the body you will see that is the position of the bird with the tail a little up and out of position, the border I think is attractive like this, over the years judges have helped to promote this type of bird probably without realising it! By putting it foreword, it makes a more compact bird. 114 would not get into my breeding stock today; itâs not round enough and not filled in under the beak to give it nice cheeks.
If you select a nice round yellow hen, short with 12 to 4 shape with good leg, it does not have to be big, with the right cock she could be the foundation of your for years to come, smaller hens seem to move better with more bounce and I find they feed better than big birds. They have given me a lot of pleasure over the years, much more than straight through or 11 to 5 type birds did. Phil
(Posted on 2008-03-25 11:50:00 by ) -
When I watched the videos [which I only bought from Phil last autumn], I read this to mean the stance of a bird in respect of a clock face. [ie;'12 to 4' means the head is directly at the vertical and the tail points to 4 o'clock]. Whereas I understood '11 to 5' to mean the bird doesn't have quite such an upright stance.
I would still be interested to hear your confirmation of this Phil.
DG
(Posted on 2008-03-24 21:34:00 by ) -
Hi Phil
Would you please elaborate on your terminology 11 to 5 and 12 to 4.I have scanned your videos for this information and I cannot find any reference to it.
Which youngsters to get rid of must be a difficult perdicament to be in but can only benefit the Border fancy in the long term, with your surplus stock helping us all to improve the quality of our birds.
All the best for 2008 breeding season
Scotty
(Posted on 2008-03-24 15:40:00 by ) -
Happy Easter Mike. I have had my first chicks this weekend! You asked about 114 he was a little straight through, sort of 11 to 5 and I like birds 12 to 4 shape, this gives a bird a shorter back and makes a rounder bird, so thats what I have been working on over the years. I have been very lucky with dominant cocks since 114, Both yellow and buff cocks have been good, this does make it very hard sorting out the surplus birds at the end of the season. Phil

Hi Phil
Well you will be pleased to know that I have been able to get you out of the V.C.R.
But on a serious note I would like to ask a couple of questions relating to the video.
1. Now that it is 20 years since ring 114 was born is he still related somehow to all the birds in your stud
2 Have you ever had another bird so dominant since.
speak to you soon

Dear Leng. In most cases it costs as much to import twelve as it dose to import a single bird. What I suggest you do, is give me a ring about june/july time to discuss what I have bred and to give you an idea of the price for current year birds. Kind regards for now. Phil

Hi Phil,
I have been doing some more reading on importing canaries into Canada. It is possible to import canaries from a HPNAI free zone but the cost for paperwork, vet fees and inspections done by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency is more than $1000CDN or £500. No, we won't be eating the canaries; the Canadian Food Inspection Agency is the department that ensures imported animals are disease free. My question is, what should I expect to pay for quality borders that I can use to produce show birds?
Leng

Hi Leng. Not very many birds have gone to Canada over the last few years,a lack of interest from Canada and the USA., It seems a few have left the fancy, although some of my bloodline has been passed around, It must be quite thin by now. Im sorry I cannot of more help. Regards Phil

On the subject on strange foods...I see versele laga are now marketing "clay blocks" for Canaries. If you've ever seen the documentarys on TV about Parrots in the Amazon eating special clay ...well VL claim that this stuff is formulated to aid digestion, in Canaries.Wonder does it?

Hi Scotty. Thanks for asking about my op, all is ok but taking longer this time, I am sending you a calender but cant find your address, could you email it to me please. In the forum you talked about getting the best results regarding colour, I have a couple more tips to pass on, birds cannot absorb colour and nutrients at the same time, I'm not sure why but I have noticed birds that are not well during the moult end up a poor colour as if all the energy goes into maintaining the health of the bird rather than promoting the colour. Also cut down on light, perhaps change from daylight bulbs to ordinary lights until they finish moulting.
all the best Phil

pagey7 Hi Mike, Eminent bird pathologists, and leading vets throughtout the world believe canaries have a sterile bowel, canaries belong to the most advanced order of birds called Oscine passerines they have no CAECA and have no resident bowel or so called "friendly bacteria" except Coloured canaries they originate from the Red Hooded Siskin a more primitive bird order. food eaten by canarys is digested chemically, then absorbed in the small intestine without the presence of symbiolic bacteria. This does not mean antibiotics wont work, so please do use antibiotics if a bird needs it.
The idea of probotics is to stimulate and increase the friendly bacteria but as the canary has no caeca it cant work. So probotics have no use in my birdroom anymore. phil

Daniele & Massimo De Giglio. What makes a border special is its movement, jaunty with a lot of poise, what we mean by that is the bird is asking to win specials, it is dancing on the perch, it is moving in such a way as to say, " I'm not just a winner I'm the best!" Have a look at the way my birds move, on 2007 Video 2,the last bird a clear buff hen, she stands and moves with such delight, and what a great head! good leg and a well balanced body, by that I mean she has as much body behind the leg as in front of the leg,as you said the fifes do lack that body balance because the legs are too far back, or you need to extend the draw. The heads on fifes could do with improving, again look at the buff hen, she has a very good head, she also has good width through the head and body, this has been bred into my birds for many years.
I do think that the first fife on your website moves wery well, and that's the first time I have ever said that about a fife!! So you are doing something right! and you are doing very well with your English, well done.

(Posted on 2008-02-16 19:46:00 by ) -
Hello Mr Phil,
we think that the size is important but we think also that position, roundness and plumage are of utmost importance.
Besides we fell that the legs in the current Fife's standard are wrong becouse with that leg the natural position could not be semi-erect.
Regard the second question we are agreed with you. 1st 2nd and 3rd birds in the some class could be the three best bird in show.
What is the most important characteristic that the best border and best fife should have?
Regards

Daniele & Massimo De Giglio. Hello again, I am not sure if the fife model is going to change. How do you feel fifes should be judged? Do you select the best then second best and so on, or do you select the best then look for another bird the same size to continue the class in uniformity? Wen I judge I select the best bird then look for the next best, it does not matter to me if the first bird is small & the next bird is big, if its the second best in that class then it stays second, some say this is not consistant because of the size difference! Another problem we sometimes have in the UK is selecting second best in show, some clubs wont let you take out the second in the class to the best in show , I say why not, because the 1st 2nd & 3rd birds in the same class could be the three best birds in show, what do you think? Phil

Hi Mr Phil,
the model at the top of the page is an our sketch. We donât like the current standard of Fife.
To our way of thinking the natural evolution of Fifeâs standard is the same of Border:
Long legs, very round body, obvious nape of the neck.
When will change Fifeâs standard?

Hi Ken Warne.I have spent hours trying to film birds through glass & plastic, but the birds never look relaxed enough. when the birds did look good as they did on 2000 calendar, fanciers said that they liked the bars in front as they can assess the size & position better, you cant please everyone Ken,

Daniele & massimo De Giglio.congratulations on a good site & some nice fifes, I dont like the model at the top of the page its a very strange shape!. your birds have good position but watch the front or chest as a few of them are square.

marigolds are good use deep orange not red, can be used for buffs & yellows but not dark or green birds.

Hi Phil
Whats Pagey on about (28/12/07).He obviously does'nt appreciate decent music.
You cant beat a bit of George Mcrae,The Shirelles,Whitney Houston,John Lennon
& Elvis Costello--- Music to breed good Borders by, eh Phil
If Pagey ever has a web site you will probably find Guns & Roses,Aerosmith,
AC/DC,Black Sabbath or Led Zeplin blasting away in the background.
Pagey always was a bit of a head banger.
Regards
Scotty
